Fall Fashion: Military Moments

When it comes to closet staples, a military jacket is an essential item to own this season. The military uniform heavily influenced many of the most renowned fashion designers for their Spring 2016 runway shows. Gucci, Burberry and Givenchy were just a few of the top tier designers who showcased military jackets that were greatly influenced by the Age of Enlightenment, featuring styles from 18th century France and Britain; brass buttons, rope trim and epaulettes are just a few of the similarities seen across the trending military jackets.

Normally, when I think of a military jacket, John Lennon and his M-65 jacket is the first thing that pops up in my mind along with the iconic Saharienne jacket introduced by Yves Saint Laurent in 1960. After seeing the Spring 2016 collection, I now think of military jackets as more ornate and eye-catching. I think of the broad lapels, distinguished bold shoulders, elegant trims and bejeweled jackets as seen in Dolce & Gabbana’s as well as Marc Jacobs’ Spring ’16 collections. The classic military jacket has become a wearable form of art; a modern twist on the past.
