A trip to Barcelona in the fall is not complete without also experiencing the La Mercè festival. The festival takes place over several days surrounding September 24th. This date is the Roman Catholic feast day of Our Lady of Mercy, La Mare de Déu de la Mercè. During the festivities, the streets of Barcelona fill with millions of people and over 600 events celebrating Catalan culture. Visitors marvel at human pyramids up to ten people tall or enjoy a dazzling fire run through the streets. From the wine fair to the concerts and fireworks, La Mercè certainly earns its nickname, “the festival of festivals!”
