Those who received an invitation to Tom Ford’s latest runway show also received a bottle of his newest fragrance, F**king Fabulous, which is a pretty accurate description of the runway show itself. The glamorous collection featured menswear inspired pieces that showed off Ford’s exquisite eye for tailoring. It is no small feat to master menswear, but to be able to translate those tailoring skills to women’s fashion is remarkable. We chose a few pieces we’ve been coveting from Tom Ford’s SS18 collection and wanted to share them with you.
Daring Blazers
The very first look that came down the runway featured a strong cut jacket that showed obvious menswear influences. The broad, bold shoulders contrasted to the soft pink material that was light enough to have a bit of drape to it. The model wore the jacket draped over her shoulders in a fashion that was both powerful and chic. Just a few looks later, another wore a draped blazer. This piece’s masculine cut was offset by its shocking pink color.
High-waisted Trousers
The collection features both low slung and high-waisted pants, but we especially love the latter. Ford expertly designed these trousers from a variety of fabrics, including denim, yet they all draped beautifully down to a wide-legged hem.
Double-breasted Trench Coats
Every woman should have a classic trench in her wardrobe, and you won’t go wrong with one of the coats Ford sent down this runway. These double-breasted trenches feature a wider-set collar which draws attention upward to the wearer’s face. The strong lines of the coat demonstrate Ford’s mastery of tailoring.
Menswear Inspired Evening Wear
Even the glamorous evening wear pieces in this collection featured touches inspired by menswear. Our favorite may be the black-on-black double-breasted tuxedo. Double-breasted suits tend to make the wearer look boxy, but Ford managed to tailor the jacket to nip in the waist while retaining the double-breasted style. Other evening looks featured ultra-feminine sheer, rushed gowns paired with cropped tuxedo jackets.
The Old Ford Reemerges?
I’m seeing a lot of collections I did in the ’90s referenced by other designers, and I look at that and I say, ‘How interesting, maybe I should remember what it was that I was all about and go back.’ That’s what this September’s show will be about. I hope that I’m returning to what I’ve always believed in, but in a new way.
There are some who suggest this collection signals a return to the glamour and drama that Ford was known for at Gucci. Watch the video above to see the entire runway show, then give us your opinions in the comments below!
