Panthère de Cartier Jewelry Design: Big, Bold Luxury

Arguably one of the most iconic motifs in jewelry, the Cartier Panther symbolizes the sensuality and mystery of a woman.  Cartier has used the big cat to embellish rings, necklaces, watches and more in their stunning Panthère de Cartier collection.  The prices of these pieces are often only available by request, signaling the high cost required to own one of their signature pieces.  Panthère de Cartier jewelry design instantly signifies extravagant luxury and bold fashion taste.

History

The panther was a common figure in art and illustrations in the early 1900s.  It was at this time that French illustrator George Barbier created his “Lady with a Panther” for Louis Cartier.  The illustration shows a panther at the feet of a woman who is dressed in an elegant gown.  Cartier’s partner, Jeanne Toussaint, was herself nicknamed “La Panthere” and she took the cat as her emblem.  In the 1920s, Toussaint brought the panther into the world of jewelry by making Panthère de Cartier one of the most recognizable jewelry collections in history.

The Maison’s emblematic panther, first leaped into the world of Cartier jewelry in 1914. Louis Cartier was a pioneer in taming the legendary creature and his associate Jeanne Toussaint went on to make magnificent use of the icon. The panther has since inspired a timeless and elegant collection of jewelry and timepieces that show the multiple facets of the animal that can be at times bold, regal or sensual.
