Layered Looks Perfect for Cooler Weather

As summer transitions into fall, it becomes practical to dress in layers. The unpredictable nature of fall weather provides us the opportunity to layer our looks with more designer fashions. This fall, layering is about more than just silhouette. Designers are mixing patterns, contrasting textures, and pairing casual and formal pieces for the ultimate in layered style. We tapped a few of our favorite fashion designers to bring you these layered looks perfect for cooler weather.

Drawing inspiration from the American West, this cotton shirt showcases a custom jacquard-woven plaid, designed exclusively for our 50th Anniversary Collection. Workwear-inspired, this Italian-made piece is washed for an exceptionally soft hand.

Ralph Lauren’s recent 50th-anniversary collection is a master class on layering. The looks on the New York Fashion Week runway showcased the brand’s signature way of effortlessly blending glamour and tradition. One of our favorite recurring styles in the collection was the layered looks of casual button downs over evening wear. In the photo above, the model wears the Aiden Cotton Shirt ($590) over a shimmering cocktail dress. The menswear cut shirt is belted and the sleeves pushed up to create a more feminine silhouette. While this may be a more dramatic look than you would be willing to wear in your everyday life, you can still take inspiration from the styling. Consider layering a little black dress with an oxford-cut button-down, belted at the waist.

Rendered in rich leather with understated hardware, this moto jacket is a cool mainstay in any wardrobe. Layer it over casual separates to channel a model-off-duty sensibility.

Moto jackets are excellent wardrobe staples for fall. We have often put a moto jacket over a tank or light tee for a cool, chic evening look. We love how Michael Kors styled his Leather Moto Jacket ($495) over a hooded sweater. This look draws cues from the strong streetwear trend with much cleaner proportions. By keeping the color scheme neutral, this look is still sleek and minimalist.

Isabel Marant

If you are ready to bring on the fall layers but the weather is not cooperating, take a cue from Isabel Marant. The brand styled this model in the Kyne Pea Coat in Cotton and Wool ($1,160) and a sleek mini skirt. Choosing a demure blouse to wear under the coat makes the look suitable for the work day. You can also choose a more casual underpinning for the evening. While the weather is still warm, push the sleeves of the coat up to 3/4 length. Then as the weather cools, you can wear this gorgeous double-breasted coat full-sleeved. Layered looks like these are also super versatile.

Jump into the streetwear trend with this White Knitwear ($1,310) sweater from Off-White. As is popular in current streetwear designs, the sweater plays around with traditional knitwear proportions. The cropped torso of the sweater is contrasted by the overlong and over-sized knit cuffs. The short length of the sweater makes it ideal for layering over longer pieces like this striped button-down shirt. Follow the trend by keeping the proportions large and loose.

Forgo the traditional fall leather coat with something much more relaxed. Loewe’s Coat Japanese Blue ($4,890) is minimal and sleek in blue lambskin. The relaxed cut of the jacket calls for slim cut trousers and a lightweight top. Layering anything too bulky under this beautiful coat would ruin the silhouette, so keep it clean and sharp.

Layered looks are the perfect way to welcome in the cooler weather of fall. So, tell us, which of these looks will you try?
