New York Fashion Week F/W 2017 Wrap Up

The air is frigid, the ground is covered in leftover snow from a recent blizzard and the sky is gloomy but that doesn’t stop NYFW…the shows must go on! I have to admit; it is a little difficult to get dressed for fashion shows when it is below 30 degrees outside. You want to look elegant and chic but dressing to the nines when there is slush on the ground can present a bit of an issue. Regardless, by day one of NYFW, somehow, everything seems to fall into place and each fashion show is incredible in its own way! Below is a list of some of my favorite shows this season.

Georgine

Georgine Ratelband is one of my absolute favorite designers and her collections never cease to amaze me. She is able to design glamorous looks with a youthful eye, which results in a refreshing and alternative collection each season. Her Fall 2017 collection consist of practical yet alternative fashion designs such as knee length trench coats with gradient fur, velvet bodysuits and various dresses that were cinched at the waist, giving the models a beautiful silhouette.

Georgine designs garments using incredible fabrics and intricate detail that show her exemplary craftsmanship. She even went as far as combining lace and lurex (a risky combination) however she was able to design looks that completely redirected the fashion cliché! In just thirty-two looks, Georgine was able to impress the crowed leaving us wanting more and looking forward to her next collection.

Vivienne Hu

This was my first year attending Vivienne Hu and I was beyond impressed with this particular designer. Prior to the show, I visited her flagship store in Soho and was styled from head-to-to in her fabulous designs. There were so many incredible pieces to choose from but I opted for a sleek pair of black pants (the Guerrier) and a chic blazer that made me feel elegant yet a bit edgy.  Her collection is the perfect combination of downtown New York style combined with European elegance.

Vivienne Hu’s collection included outstanding looks that ranged from cropped leather jackets paired with two-tone leggings, slouchy leather pants and sleeveless fur vests to military dresses and puffy coats with incredible fur hoods. Vivienne Hu does an excellent job of combining fabrics in order to create a unique yet cohesive collection. This is just the start of Vivienne Hu’s fashion career; she is truly a talented young designer.

LanYu

LanYu is an extremely talented young designer who presented a beautiful and cohesive collection. Her latest collection showcased soft and feminine outwear, varying from pale shades of pink to deep greens and gold. The collection is anything but basic, ranging from velvet lounge coats to lace bomber jackets and ruffled trousers. My personal favorites were the oversized coats as well as LanYu’s trademark fitted dresses. The models looked beautiful yet eccentric with rainbow colored eyebrows and sleek hair that was tied back with pastel-colored ribbons. LanYu never disappoints and I look forward to seeing her future collections.

Mimi Prober is a New York based designer who is making a statement in the fashion industry with her zero-waste philosophy. Each garment is created by hand using antique materials from the 18th to early 20th century.

Mimi Prober’s latest collection was beautiful as it showcased what I like to call, sustainable luxury! As the lights dimmed and the infamous song “Hallelujah” flooded the venue, models appeared draped in her latest designs. The collection was limited to a soft color scheme, mainly consisting of grey, beige, off-white, black and gold embellishments.

The unique embroidery and lace designs were seen throughout the entire collection, which included everything from a little black dress to suits and woven dresses. This is one designer to keep an eye on!

Francesca Liberatore

Francesca Liberatore is a force to be reckoned with!  Her Fall/Winter 2017 collection brought bold details to the runway, dedicating the collection to the prowess of today’s modern woman as well societal effect. When asked in an interview about her inspiration behind the collection, she mentioned that Franklin Roosevelt was a key figure in the design process. She wanted to convey the feeling of empowerment and success that was seen in the 32nd President of the United States.

As the lights dimmed and the show began, the opening look was a stunning long white coat styled over a black velvet jumpsuit, accessorized with bold red jewelry, a fringe belt and knee-high boots. The coat looked chic and elegant from the front but quickly transformed into a powerful statement as soon as the model turned the corner and you could clearly read the phrase “Save Freedom of Speech” printed along the back left side.

This look truly made an impression and set the tone for the rest of her collection…ambitious feminine power!  Francesca also presented elegant lace dresses, long coats trimmed with fur and powerful stripes. Although the color scheme was mostly made from pastels, the entire collection was a powerful statement that was luxurious and eye-catching. I look forward to attending her next show in the fall!
